Marsh Haven Farm has installed a state of the art O2 Manure Composting system and uses it to compost the 7 tons of manure produced annually per horse. The resulting product provides an excellent resource for gardeners and greenhouses and is in high demand in the local area.

We are really excited to be installing the first O2 Compost System® in Alberta and the furthest north facility that Peter Moon, the inventor/owner of the system, has engineered.

O2 Compost is an aerated system that produces composted manure in about one third of the time of traditional composting methods, with NO turning!

We are installing the largest system, which has the capacity to compost manure/bedding for up to 30 horses.

Check our "What's New" for pictures of the system under construction.

Living within a protected area, we realized we had a huge responsibility to leave as small an environmental footprint as possible. The idea of e-coli bacteria from horse manure leaching into the ground water was unacceptable to us.

Donna attended several Alberta Agriculture sponsored workshops addressing pasture management, nutrient management and composting manure. It was through one of her horse magazines that she saw an ad for O2 Compost. Upon investigation and checking references, she saw this as an exciting opportunity to literally "turn manure into gold", especially with The Greystone Pasture Vacuum to pick our pastures with. It was also through links on the O2 Compost System, that we discovered Dr. Karen Hayes and her Integral Horse site (see Links), which has subsequently become an indispensable source of on-going education and support for us. Her book, The Complete Book of Foaling, was already a well-used resource in our library.

We have agreed to become a demonstration site for Agriculture Canada, through whose Canada/Alberta Stewardship Project, we have received funding assistance for our O2 Composting System. Additionally, we welcome any visitors to the farm to see this awesome facility.

After having lived on a small acreage with a few horses, we soon realized that if you don't pick up your manure, you live in it. Additionally, the speed at which the pile grows is absolutely astounding. And while you may not be bothered by the flies or the smell, your neighbors inevitably will be.

Therefore, we are especially excited about O2 Compost's small system for 1-4 horses which we will be adding to our product line soon. There is a huge market for this type of product in the Edmonton and Calgary areas, where there are so many people living on small acreages with horses. It provides an easy, economical alternative to piling systems, or more labour-intensive composting routines.
